Very Informative

This book was very informative on the condition of the Church. It confirms personally what I have been receiving about the Church and helps that I am not alone in my position as well. As ministers, my husband and myself, believe fully that in the end days that home churches will be the dominate place of coming together. I thank God for the boldness of David Orton to come forth and confirming what some of us have been experiencing as I'm sure this stance is not well received in some churches. There are some positions that I did not quite agree with but I take that in prayer to the Lord to confirm as I do not want to be in a place of deception or blindness. As we should take all positions we read about to the Lord Jesus Christ in prayer.

In the book “Snakes in the Temple – Unmasking Idolatry in Today’s Church,” visionary and prophetic teacher David Orton challenges his readers to consider the possibilities of reformation, revival, and worldwide spiritual awakening if the Christian Church of today were to restore its Biblical foundations, and to join the next generation in a commitment to see this come to fruition.

The book is organized into three sections. Chapters one through three explore the dream of future revival, while envisioning a spiritual awakening. Section two describes the present realities and a diagnosis of the idolatry found in the church of today. Section three outlines the steps needed for a spiritual breakthrough and a restoration of the glory of the Lord in the church of tomorrow.

Orton draws from spirit breathed scriptures to develop a thorough history of earlier revival in the church, which came about through restoration of worship, harvest, and awakening. He is genuine in his evaluation and in his analysis of the present status and decline of the church.

His conclusions, proposals, call to Holiness, and his prescription for renewal are well thought out, however, they may seem radical to some. Whether Charismatic, Evangelical, or Missional in theological stand, every reader will find practical principles for Christian living, spiritual growth, restoration of Biblical truth, and revival.

Motivate Your Students

I have some of the same questions all educators do, including: how to motivate my students, how to help my students feel more positive about school, and how to help my students develop higher-order thinking questions. Thanks to Larry Ferlazzo's latest book, I now have answers to these questions and several others. Although Larry Ferlazzo teaches high school, as an elementary teacher, I can still use (and easily modify) his many ideas and lesson plans. I highly recommend this book. It will make you a more effective teacher because you will be better equipped to deal with the daily challenges of motivating students.

Nice thoughts, but not applicable.

I'm not convinced that the lessons in this book can be universally applied. Sure, there are some interesting ideas in here about teaching optimism versus pessimism, different types of text that people read, goal-setting, and the like, but I'm almost positive that this wouldn't fly in an EFL situation outside of America. I'm almost definitely sure it wouldn't fly in a for-profit academy. And I'm not certain, but it's possible that some of these lessons couldn't even be applied on the East Coast of the United States either, say in New York City or Chicago. There are some recommended manufactured scripts for teachers in this book, for example, that sound absolutely awkward coming out of my mouth--almost robotic and superficial. Also, nearly every activity seems to involve some kind of drawing of something, which I'm sure would make my current supervisors absolutely infuriated with me (I teach high school and middle school, by the way). Even with the research that has been done on how students most effectively learn, the truth is that science is inseparable from culture... and this truth becomes blatantly clear within the pages of this book.

If I ever go back to the United States and find work in San Diego or Sacramento, maybe I'll have some use for this book. However, given my personal teaching circumstances that presently forbid the use of said activities contained in this book, coupled with the money that I spent on this book, I have become a very disappointed buyer. I guess a sucker is born every day.

Also, be forewarned that Mr. Ferlazzo does a lot of cross-promoting in this book and almost every other sentence makes reference to the crucial activities that can be found in his other books that you need to buy, etc. etc. You get the idea.

Caveat emptor.

A Keeper!

Written in a similar style to his "Helping Students Motivate Themselves", this book is a great combination. It focuses on issues that matter; it is relevant. It is research based and gives you a sense of the underlying theory. It is practical and actionable; it gives you tested materials you can easily adapt to your class.

It is very readable and too the point. It is written by a practicing teacher for teachers. I can go to his blog and read about the evolution of most of these materials. I can view artifacts his students have created using some of these materials.

Welcome to Heartsville!

Mark Werner is pulling out all the stops to try and save his book store from closing due to declining sales. He contacts local Author Shepherd Knight first by email, then by phone when he receives no response, to ask him if he will do a signing at the store. Shepherd is anything but kind, in fact, he is downright nasty. So Mark responds in kind and writes the reclusive Author off. Mark is pleasantly surprised when Shepherd contacts him not only to say he will attend the signing, but to apologize. Perhaps Mister tall, dark and grumpy is Mister Right after all.

I really enjoyed the light hearted nature of this story, even though there were a few heavy aspects to it. It was the perfect introduction to the town of Heartsville. There was a decent amount of content for so few pages as well and nothing felt rushed or glossed over. The perfect balance of romance, intrigue and angst rounded out the cast of characters.

I’m excited to see where the next story goes, I had so much fun watching Mark and Shepherd as they fell in love.

Mildly entertaining fluff

Decently written, from a grammatical standpoint, but there was no emotional resonance; the author never made me feel for the characters. There was very little conflict to drive the story, and what conflict there was ended up resolved quickly and easily and feeling like it had no real or lasting impact on the characters. Mark and Shepherd's romance didn't feel like it had any real basis, either; we're told that they're attracted to each other, but we never really feel that attraction. In fact, there's a lot of telling rather than showing, which keeps this story from reaching its potential.

Overall it's a bit of mildly entertaining fluff, and while I don't actually resent having spent 99 cents on it, I probably won't be buying more from this author in the future, either.

“Welcome to the gayborhood! In the cozy town of Heartsville, the streets are lined with trees, the shops are full of friendly faces, and happily ever after is just around the corner. Come get to know the boys next door – naughty, nice, and everything in between.”

Bookmarked by Piper Vaughn is the first book in a five part contemporary MM romance series which is a collaborative effort by five authors. Each novella is written by a different author and will feature a different couple. The authors involved in this project introduce us to Heartsville, a town with a thriving LGBT community. As the series progresses we will get to meet some of Heartsville’s inhabitants and business owners. Welcome to Heartsville’s gayborhood!

Twenty-eight year old Mark Werner is the owner of Bookmarked, an independent bookstore on Market Street which is the main area in downtown Heartsville. He’s proud of his business but will be the first to admit that he is struggling to stay afloat. He’s afraid that his bookstore and all that he has worked towards will go under and be yet another casualty of the convenience of internet shopping. If the circumstances do not change in the near future there is no way Mark will be able to continue with Bookmarked. In an effort to generate more business, Mark decides to hold an author signing and hopes that best-selling author, Shepherd Knight, will respond to his request to attend. The truth of the matter is that Mark is not holding his breath. Not after their disastrous first encounter where Mark acted like a gushing fan-boy and Shepherd acted like a first class a**-hat. This was a tender, sweet and sexy tale as we watch the two men go from an antagonistic type of situation to something more. Something neither one of them expected when they ventured down the road of harmless flirtation and lust. I loved watching Shepherd battle against his social awkwardness to make an effort with the gorgeous bookstore owner. There was something just so endearing about both characters that had me rooting for them. Definitely a feel-good quick read that is all about making your heart happy.

All in all, Bookmarked is a fun, angst-free tale that had me smiling from start to finish and left me happily sighing in romance lala land. I am looking forward to the remainder of the novellas in this series and can’t wait to see how more of Heartsville’s residents succumb to love.

It is densely packed with facts but is not comprehensive and does not provide much detail, and as such is best used as a starting point for research. Due to its mature terminology, this book is ideal for fifth grade and above. The colorful illustrations and artifact photos found on each page enhance the book, and definitions of certain terms are located in the sidebars while terms denoted in bold can be found in the glossary at the end of the book. This book changed my life when I was 20, over 30 years ago. It is worth reading. Back then, some of these ideas were "radical". They may seem less so now, but nonetheless, it is good to know where you come from.

Dated but with a Place in History

When first printed in 1974, this would have been a ground-breaking read for women of faith, introducing the concept of options for women's lives inside and/or outside the home. Today, though, it is quite dated and worth the read mainly as a snapshot of Christian feminist history. Two of the fifteen chapters are notable exceptions: one about women in several of the pagan Biblical nations, each discussed individually; and the second about wasting the church's gifts. Especially the former, coupled with the book's place in history, makes this book a good addition to any Christian feminist collection.
