A great resource if you need to work on a Arts and Crafts house.

Thirty years ago I was putting myself through college as a carpenter and had the pleasure of working on a number of Arts and Crafts homes. I wish I had owned this book then. I would have spent far less time scratching my head while trying to repair or replace damaged interior details or reproduce them in additions and remodeling projects.
The details in the book are generally from Gustav Stickley's patterns and designs, but it contains elements of many details that fall under the Arts and Crafts umbrella whether you call it "Mission", "Prairie", or "Craftsman".
These great old structures pack a lot of house into comparatively modest square footage, and it is the sort of details documented in this book that make Craftsman homes work so well. Would that I were just a bit younger, this book would inspire me to return to the trades, specializing in the care of these old gems. The only demerit I can muster for this book is that some of the reproduction drawings and photos are a bit muddy, but they are not the meat of this text.
Mr. Lang's own shop drawings are outstanding, clear, well labeled and easy to follow whether you are reproducing a detail in the shop, or drawing out a complete cabinet installation.

This book and a good router table...

There is not much in this book you cannot make with a good router table. It provides the missing links between the desire to recreate Arts & Crafts structures and doing so: design and dimension. But its more than that. If you are looking at this book, you probably already have the mindset that came with the whole Arts & Crafts movement, but if not, Lang does an excellent job of putting it in historical perspective in the introductory chapters on the movement itself and the key players, Stickley in particular. It wasn't just about design, but included an element of lifestyle that, as Lang offers, did not follow it on into the 20th century housing industry.
You will need some basic woodworking skills to recreate these designs in practice, but nothing over the top. It is a very highly recommended resource and one should not hesitate to add it to his or her collection. Even if you simply appreciate Arts & Crafts design and don't plan to actually use the book to do specific work, you will learn enough to further your appreciation of the movement.
Short of some needed proofreading for typos, it is a fantastic volume.

Excellent Reference for DIYers

If you have read "Inside the Bungalow: America's Arts and Crafts Interior" and dream of DIYing some of the things you saw in it, get this book to see the general layout of typical pieces/constructs. Remember that all that you have seen was largely, and sometimes entirely, made with hand tools. With modern power tools--and not many of them--a patient DIYer can have a blast and make things of historical interest and lasting aesthetic appeal.
