A Book Addressing the Realities of Listening Prayer

This book was one of the most nurturing I have found on the subject of prayer. Leanne Payne, unlike many other authors coming coming from a Charismatic background, emphasizes the fact that prayer and a relationship with Christ is simple persistence, and work. While other authors say this with their words, I saw this "persistence and work" theme emphasized over, and over. Her book erased any thought of a "quick and easy" relationship; her emphasis centers on Christ, and Christ alone.
My only criticism is my desire, even need, to have more examples. I appreciated her narrative, and her use of Scriptural authority. However, real life examples, woven into the text, would have been helpful. She gave some examples (especially in her chapter in Chapter 12 on "How God Speaks to His Children"), but more would have been helpful to place her discussion into a context. Also, she was extremely circumspect in detailing one of her own experiences; after reading it, I did not know what she was trying to express, or what, precisely, occurred.
This criticism is the only reason for my four-star rating. If I could, I would give a "4.5" or a "4.6." This book is one to be read several times, and I highly recommend it.

I have been using a prayer journal based on Payne's model for nearly a year and have seen her ideas move me towards greater intimacy with Christ. Other volumes she's written are more complex, but this is quite readable. Her emphasis is always to look straight to Christ, not to a method.

Useful guide to journaling and listening to God

I found Listening Prayer especially helpful in two ways.

My former attempts to keep a prayer journal have all come to naught -- perhaps because as an ordinary layman I seldom have enough time to really listen. Payne has given me a new way to organize my journaling and my prayer times as sections in a looseleaf binder. One section covers listening through Scripture, another praise, another confession, and so on. Contents of each section vary over time. Payne suggests sample materials to set the tone for each.

The second half of the book, a practical guide to listening to God in general, springs from Payne's own experiences, both from her initial involvement in the charismatic revival and from her extensive healing prayer ministry. Chapter 12 includes unusually detailed descriptions -- feelings, sights, sounds -- of how God communicates guidance, wisdom, or encouragement to us today (as distinct from the completed "special revelation" of the Scriptures). Since we are often mistaken in thinking we're hearing from God, Payne emphasizes the importance of having frank partners in accountability and the danger of focusing on our own feelings -- which she refers to in The Healing Presence: Curing the Soul Through Union with Christ as "the disease of introspection."

While Payne is sometimes called "cerebral," this volume is practically oriented.

About the Author
Joan Ryan, M.B.A., Ph.D., C.M.A., has taught personal finance for over 20 years. She began at Willamette High School in Eugene, Oregon, where this textbook was initially developed and tested. After four years there, she taught in the business department at Lane Community College (also in Eugene) for 12 years. After eight years at Clackamas Community College, she was department chair for the next six years. Then she resumed teaching accounting, personal finance, and business law, retiring from full-time teaching in 2014. She also is a C.M.A. (certified management accountant), a state-certified mediator, and adjunct faculty at Clackamas Community College and Portland State University in the graduate Masters in International Management program.

About the Author
G. Kurt Piehler is director of the Institute of World War II and the Human Experience and associate professor of history at Florida State University. Prior to becoming the institute director in 2011, he held academic positions at the City University of New York, Drew University, Rutgers University, and the University of Tennessee. In 2008, he served as Fulbright Lecturer in American Studies at Kobe University and Kyoto University. As founding director (1994–1998) of the Rutgers Oral History Archives, he conducted more than 200 interviews with veterans of World War II.

Piehler is the author of Remembering War the American Way (1995) and World War II (2007). He is editor of The United States in World War II: A Documentary Reader (2013) and co-edited The United States and the Second World War: New Perspectives on Diplomacy, War, and the Home Front (2010); The Atomic Bomb and American Society: New Perspectives (2009); and Major Problems in American Military History (1999). He served as associate editor of Americans at War: Society, Culture, and the Home Front (2005) and consulting editor of the Oxford Companion to American Military History (1999). Piehler edits two book series: World War II: The Global, Human, Ethical Dimension (Fordham University Press) and Legacies of War (University of Tennessee Press).

Helps put things into place

If you've ever wondered (as I have), when is the Marriage Supper of the Lamb? Which comes first, the Battle of Armageddon or the Battle of Gog and Magog? What happens to people who come to Christ during the Tribulation - how do they get into the Kingdom, or do they even get in? Or any of a myriad other questions about the order of End Times events, then you need to read this book. Dr. Jimmy DeYoung has a knack for taking complicated texts and laying them out in a way even a child could understand. (As he points out in the preface, that's where all this got started - teaching Revelation to children!)

I would highly recommend this to anyone who is at all confused by the Last Days Bible prophecies, anyone who is on the fence about Pretrib / posttrib / mid-trib / other, or anyone who wants to be able to answer questions from those who are (Bible study leaders, Sunday School teachers, Pastors, witnesses, etc.).

Even if you have it down in your own mind, this is an excellent guide to help you know how to explain it to others in a clear, step-by-step, this-then-this-then-this fashion. By looking at the book of Revelation chronologically instead of chapter order, it makes much more sense to a layman like me. I especially like the timeline graphics throughout the book to let you know at a glance when the events being discussed will take place.

Jimmy does a fine job of sorting out what's being portrayed in this book about the end times. He makes clear each instance of events that are not given chronologically so the time line makes sense.

A great read for beginning Bible Prophecy students (or old pros)

This is a good read especially if you are new to Bible Prophecy and Revelation confuses you. This book discusses Revelation in chronological order, not in the order it is written which is sometimes confusing as there are "parenthesis" in the chapters that tends to get new readers confused. Highly recommended!!

all strats fan will like it

At first, I'm from Brazil so my english may not be that good Ok!
The book is very complete and tells the history of Leo Fender and his associates growing up the factory till the acomplish of the Stratocaster and goes on throug the whole history, pointing some of the great players.
The pictures are amazing as well as the quality of the printing.
I have imported from Amazon to Brazil and I'm satisfied.

IF YOU WANT TO KNOW THE HISTORY OF LEO FENDER'S CLASSIC CREATION, THIS IS THE BOOK YOU WANT!

I was first introduced to the Fender Stratocaster in 1967 when i listened to the vinyl of a new recording artist by the name of Jimi Hendrix. The first song on the LP;Purple Haze........I had been playing electric guitar for just over a year and not only was I being introduced to one of the most superior artists and legends of Rock, but was captivated by the unique body style of his instrument of choice, the Fender Stratocaster. Five years later I'm playing in the band with my brand new Olympic White Fender Strat with a shining Maple neck and I never looked back. This book by Tony Bacon recaptures the complete history of that "Ultimate Axe," and it's creator, the reverend Leo Fender; along with the effect that particular guitar has had on the music industry. Anyone that is familiar with Tony Bacon already knows he is at the top of his game telling the stories of many famous guitars such as Fender's Telecaster and Gibson's Les Paul. He shares with us all the vital improvements, the ongoing expansion of an art form, and the business and musical decisions that were involved in the evolution of this classic instrument. I have read many books on the creation of my favorite musical weapon of choice but none as complete, as well illustrated and documented as this book. If you want to know the history of this great guitar....THIS IS THE ONLY BOOK YOU NEED!
