Great investment

This is a great book and I highly recommend it. I purchased it after used my school library's copy all the time for a reference in my third year surgery class. After purchasing it I have continued to use it in my fourth year.

The images are exactly what you need if you will be performing surgery and the book does a great job with the description for the procedure. I highly recommend this book I tend to use it more often than the Auer Equine Surgery book which does not have the images you need. However, it makes a great pair with the Auer book as Auer goes into pathology, pathophysiology, and other treatment options as well as prognosis and predispositions.

If you are interested in surgery or are taking a class where you will be able to perform surgery this would be a great investment.

Great illustrations

This book is very easy to read and has great illustrations for the techniques. Very helpful! One of the best buys as far as the price compared to some of the other books. Illustrations are drawings and not pictures which I find more helpful and a little more detailed than a picture.

About the Author
Jonathan Lewis has practiced psychiatry in Chicago for 35 years. He worked with George Becker in their clinic for neglected and abused children and adolescents. Subsequently, he spent 25 years in private practice focusing on the treatment of traumatized refugees and asylum seekers from countries that had experienced civil strife . Wonderfully eclectic and thought provoking.

This is a wonderfully eclectic book of essays and excerpts written by a remarkable intellectual of the mid to late twentieth century. George Becker was an anthropologist, psychologist, psychotherapist, sociologist and political theorist. His learning was wide and his insights are deep. The book takes you back to major intellectual disputes of his time that still resonate and have relevance today. The book's central theme of "perpetual adolescence" rings truer in the present political climate in the United States than ever before. Dr. Jonathan Lewis has done an excellent job in compiling this book.

Fantatic Book on God's faithfulness!

~~OH MY GOSH!!!!~~~ This book came to me at the exact time I needed it. I have always been a woman of great faith & trust but after enduring some hardships for a number of years, I was starting to get discouraged. This book built me right back up to where I needed to be. The book is simple and easy to read and shows how God came through for Peggy Joyce and her family time and time again. If you need your faith built up, this book is a must read!

Inspiring Account on how the Ruth's Applied 1st Peter 2:6

"Those who trust in the Lord will not be disappointed". - First Peter 2:6. Peggy Joyce Ruth, (the woman with three first names), presents a family narrative on how praying this verse among her family members resulted in miracle after miracle. Peggy J. Ruth takes the scripture literally, and takes this verse in 1st Peter and prayed it over her family and with her family. The results of their faith are documented in the miraculous building of their home, natural disasters diverted, job miracles, money miracles, and many more miraculous events. Ruth's unshakable premise is that God will not disappoint his faithful. While this message may seem to simplistic, one cannot argue with the blessings that resulted.

This is not theologically deep material. It is simply the application of one Bible verse and how faithfully applied, great blessings were evident. The book can be read in about 1-2 hours.

For Witkin, the goal is simple: “I wanted my photographs to be as powerful as the last thing a person sees or remembers before death.” Witkin’s photographs offer up examples of life’s extremities as unblinking confrontations with mortality, whose power derives not merely from their content but from the keen compositional instincts governing that content. Witkin’s gift for still life and his use of religious motifs such as crucifixion and sainthood have been nourished by his appreciation of the likes of Francisco Goya, Odilon Redon and Hieronymus Bosch, whose examples he has translated for the concerns of the present. Witkin’s photographs have made a colossal impact upon contemporary culture, influencing artists such as the Chapman Brothers and Erwin Olaf, musicians such as Diamanda Galás and Trent Reznor, and the late fashion designer Alexander McQueen, among many others. Vanitas provides a cross-section of the artist’s work from the 1970s to the present. In addition to photographs, it includes many lesser-known drawings and paintings, as well as Witkin’s most recent, previously unpublished photographs. A bilingual (English/Czech) text by the art historian Otto M. Urban summarizes the development of Witkin’s life and work.

Not for the faint of heart

Not for the faint of heart. Brutal yet beautiful. Morbid imagery, but not disgusting or distasteful. Joel-Peter Witkin does use real deceased human subjects in his photo surreal scenes, but it's not typically gory or focused on gore, blood and guts. It's more in the mind set of seeing the beauty in the decay. Life is not only about living, death is a part of life and life is a part of death, all of which can be seen as beautiful since you cannot have one without the other. It's complicated imagery that makes you think deeply, and sometimes cringe.

I would call it modern fine art / modern photography, but the imagery is timeless. He does do some post work in Photoshop or some other photo editing application to finalize many of his masterpieces.

JOEL-PETER WITKIN: VANITAS was published last year in the Czech Republic. Conceived as a way to allow Witkin to comment on the creative nidus of his own creations this monograph presents a collection of Witkin's latest photographs, his retablos, created over the last three years. The monograph, in English and in Czech, with a text by the art historian Otto M. Urban summarizes the development of Witkin's life and work.

Witkin is a Brooklyn born photographers who stylized black and white portraits focus on still life and portraiture and stirs up controversy whenever they are shown. Witkin's black-and-white portraits and still-lifes of hermaphrodites, body parts, severed heads, and mutilations and religious themes are the subjects and objects Witkin presents to us. For Witkin, the goal is simple: "I wanted my photographs to be as powerful as the last thing a person sees or remembers before death." Morbid to some maybe, but he photographs his subjects beautifully creating an atmosphere of decadence. His influences come from his appreciation of Goya, Odilon Redon Hieronymus Bosch, and Giotto. This book is a survey of his work from the 1970s to present day and presents a collection of Witkin's latest photographs, his retablos, created over the last three years.

The American photographer Joel-Peter Witkin, born 1939 in Brooklyn and now living in Albuquerque, NM, has been one of the most outstanding representatives in the world of photography since the end of the 1970s. His stylized black and white images are included in all major photography collections around the world. Witkin focuses mainly on still life and portraiture. His work presents a unique view of the contemporary world and he often works populated with bizarre creatures and themes have been described as `shock fodder' to the religious right due to references to religious themes (the crucifixion, saints, etc.) as well as to classical painting (Francisco Goya, Odilon Redon, Joan Miró, Hieronymus Bosch, etc. Also thanks to the work of Joel-Peter Witkin the concept of decadence and the decadent has recently emerged more and more in relation to contemporary art. The book represents a cross section of the artist's work since the 1970s to the present. In addition to photographs, lesser known drawings and paintings are also included in the book.

In Witkin's words, placed throughout the book, `My art is the way I perceive and define life. It s sacred work, since what I make are my prayers. I am not looking for sensations, even though I work with very striking elements. I merely want to express myself. Even though the elements may vary, the results should still aim to celebrate life and the positive side of it. They should educate us and lead us to greater love and mercy I only take photographs of what I believe in: if I show death, that is because even in that condition I recognize this power of reality that no imagined work can reproduce. I believe that Christ was a man who transcended this bodily form and became God: or to put it in terms of my personal belief - God placed on the man called Jesus the mask of Christ!'

This volume, perhaps more than any of his other monographs, reveals the artist behind the strange creations that have flowed from his creative mind throughout his career. Great book for my collection

Joel-Peter Witkin is a master at "out-of-the-box" thinking with a great sense of humor. Some of the art is not for the "faint of heart" but ALL of his art is inspiring and worth exploration. His art is beautifully executed as well, as is this book which is well done and the images well reproduced. I am delighted to add it to my collection.

A tribute to her parents

What a positive, life-affirming memoir from the child of a drug addict mother who was murdered and an intense father who killed himself through alcoholism and depression. Well written, too. Author Leah Carroll keeps her balance all the way through -- no pity, justified teenage rebellion and anger, yet a deep love for her troubled father and heartfelt curiosity for her mother. I, too am the daughter of an alcoholic, although one who never had the remarkable relationship with my father as she did with hers. I also know Rhode Island and its "quirks." She nailed it with those descriptions. And like most Rhode Islanders, whether living there or not, there's something about its native born casualties that fortifies one generation and passes through to the next.

Heartwarming story of survival

I loved you all with all of my heart. We were friends day and neighbors. We played and sang and danced ...and got our pictures taken I always wondered how life turned out for Leah. Thank you beautiful girl for capturing such heartfelt moment take of time...both good and bad. You are a survivor and I am very proud of you!!!! Loved the book...couldn't stop reading till the end.

About the Author

Donald Treadwell earned his master’s degree in communication from Cornell University and his PhD in communication and rhetoric from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

            He developed and taught communication research classes in classroom and online settings as well as teaching courses in organizational communication, public relations and public relations writing.

            He has published and presented research on organizational image, consumer response to college names, health professionals’ images of AIDS, faculty perceptions of the communication discipline, and employers’ expectations of newly-hired communication graduates. His research appears in Communication Monographs, Journal of Technical Writing and Communication, Public Relations Review, Journal of Human Subjectivity, and Criminal Justice Ethics.

            He is professor emeritus, Westfield State University, and has international consulting experience in agricultural extension and health communication.

Lovers and Comrades is an engaging page-turner for history buffs, WW II war enthusiasts, and novices alike. Robert Blair Osborn takes readers on a winding journey, jumping around in time over five decades and several countries, as he gives them a peek into the world of American soldiers in China during WW II. But the story goes much further than that, entwining history, mystery, and love, through rich characters and an easy-to-read narrative that leaves readers with nearly as many questions at the end as at the beginning. Highly recommended.

Constantly bringing to mind today’s onslaught of emails and cell phones at our fingertips, Robert Blair Osborn, in his first work of fiction captures the raw, surreal and confused reality of China-Japan-US relations at the birth of communism in the region. Official US, Chinese and Japanese communications are painstakingly slow and often totally inaccurate or purposefully false. Osborn, from a long international career in broadband, recreates one man’s life’s work brought to an abrupt ending in an environment that he knows from his own boots on the ground. Osborn lived and worked in Japan, China, Europe, and Latin America and creates richly complicated characters and their surroundings with ease and grace. Osborn gives us both a humanistic page turner and an abounding historical first work with hopefully much more to come.

I just finished reading this book and congratulate Robert Blair Osborn on a brilliant piece of work!
It's a real page-turner; I couldn't put it down. It flows beautifully, the characters are
all engaging, and the story is totally believable. The research he did is pretty incredible.
I really appreciate gaining an understanding of history from his point of view.
