so close....

I think this author will be really great at some point. I've read all of the books because I can see progress--for a self publisher with no editor, I can see greatness at some point. Here's some advice I'd give him however: finish the open items. If they are going to run a race-have them run it. If a bad interview gave a mentally unhealthy guy a stroke--WTHeck happened to the poor guy then? There are a ton of these and some loose ends I get but some are running items through out the books and then boom. The book just ends with out wrapping them up. If you are a reader you feel a little cheated then. I do like the humor. I do like the characters. However, I'd like to get to know the characters more. Right now I feel like as a reader I am watching them through a window vs sitting at the table as an invited guest as to who they really are as people. They feel a little one dimensional for me so I hope they continue to get a little deeper and more complex. I am being a little harsher than I ever am in review because I can see how close to really good this author could be with a little more push or perhaps a really good editor.

A tangled web

I really enjoyed this 6th book in the R and M series. I found the multiple plot strands nicely connected and the mystery just convoluted enough. One thing I like about all of Mr. Tidy's books is the strong sense of place. I feel like the Dover area is as much a character in the books as the policemen themselves. Read the series in order for the best effect- the first one is free and the next 5 are reasonably priced.

Love this series!

I have read all of the books in this series and I love them all. I am a big fan of British police procedurals. I read simply for my enjoyment and I enjoy these books. I'm always anxiously awaiting the next book in this series.

A comprehensive guide to practitioner

This book is an invaluable reference to all those in the internal auditing field, especially for all those who are now managing an internal audit function. The internal audit has been evloving constantly over the past 20 years to become more and more suitable for the modern business, with increasing focus on business strategy, consultation, control system designs and implementaion etc. This book is a very timely addition to the profession, given the increasing awareness of the need for internal control as required by the new legislation (i.e. Sarbanes-Oxley Act 2002). A wealth of information is packed inside with lots of flowcharts and graphical presentations, which make the readers all the way easy to understand and able to grasp the author's core concepts. There are many useful suggestions as well. Practicability has always been a subject of debate for an internal audit function and this book is no less to clear the myths about it. The relationship between internal and external auditors is also covered in depth. I am particularly interested in two of the chapters on behavioural aspects and marketing of auditing services. They show how the author assimilated his experiences with theory. The content on auditing over information technology including techniques and relationship with business operations demonstrated the book's comprehensiveness as ever as it could be. The subject is a niche and nobody wants to be checked and balanced. But you'd find advices on how to reconciliate the differences between the businesses and controls. This makes even more valuable to all those managers who are at the operational frontline realize how important to carry out their daily supervisions with sufficient controls. Overall, a highly recommended item.

About the Author

Samuel D. Stearns is a professor emeritus at the University of New Mexico, where has been involved in adjunct teaching and research since 1960. An IEEE fellow, Dr. Stearns was also a distinguished member of the technical staff at Sandia National Laboratories for 27 years. His principal technical areas are DSP and adaptive signal processing.

Don R. Hush is a technical staff member at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. An IEEE senior member, Dr. Hush was previously a technical staff member at Sandia National Laboratories and a professor at the University of New Mexico. He was also an associate editor for IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks and IEEE Signal Processing Magazine.

Good book with lots of examples

This book deviates from the normal dsp book in that it deals with real data as opposed to analytical signals.

The author favors engineering frequency units instead of normalized frequencies.

Try explaining normalized frequency to an engineer who is not a dsp guy and the eyes will glaze over.

Emphasis is on the DFT as opposed to all the other transforms.

Overall, a very good book for an engineer.

Interesting DSP book

I had to get this for class, but it was actually a pretty interesting book. I feel that the matlab toolbox it comes with and the example problems enable one to learn DSP techniques without even taking the class.

Misleading

I bought this text as a self-study aid, primarily because the book is advertised as including the solutions to the problems at the end of each chapter. I was very disappointed to find that the answers are provided, but the zip files for the solutions are password protected and made available to only universities. What a shamocary. Other than that, the book has proved to be very light in the discussion section and heavy in the problem sets - so the solutions are very much needed to derive any good use from the material.

Translation of Mystical Poetry

In many instances, translations lose the charm and meaning of the original. And in the case of Spiritual, mystical work, the translators tend to be bombastic or dull. V.V.Raman has done a brilliant job in giving the reader a sense into the depth of Sivapuranam. But his explanatory notes in another site gave me a chance to dive into this work. Unfortunate that was missing here and so the four stars.
I've enjoyed his writing, simple with depth.

day outside due to a down pour.
