A blah book.
By darkice7_12
I started this book with high hopes, but quickly realized that this was not going to be one of those fantastic reads, but by the end, I was just wondering why I had even bothered to read it.
SPOILERS AHEAD!
The h in the book is a total doormat. Even believing that the H wanted her to get an abortion and was getting rid of her through his assistant, she still falls back into his arms and his bed when he comes waltzing back into her life years later. She doesn't put up much of a fight at all! And, worst of all, when H starts making threats about taking her baby away, she doesn't bother to do any research and then goes with him to Greece, thus putting herself in his power.
I also did not believe in H's supposed love of h; years ago H lets h walk away from him and allows her to end their relationship. And has the nerve to say that he actually loved h but was too afraid to face his feelings. What I don't believe (and what sounds like pure fantasy) is that H says he did not sleep with anyone for over two years of the five years they were apart, and after that only had a couple of short liaisons. Yet, even THAT didn't push him into looking for a h that had just lost his baby, and someone he had had a relationship with for an entire year and was planning on marrying. Yes, H says he felt guilty about the fact that she had lost their baby, but he doesn't even bother to check up on her afterward!
I hate wishy washy Hs who would take any excuse to avoid facing their feelings about h, but this H was the worst. He just let h walk away, without any supposed betrayals clouding the issue. This book was just blah, and I questioned all the passion that H was suddenly feeling for h, when he EASILY lived without her for FIVE years and found her at the snap of his fingers. Don't waste your money buying this one.

A Romance Junkie

Jed was a douche bag and he was a douche bag till the last chapter of this book. I didn't like him or Phoebe...hope I spelled the doormat's name right. Jed had an affair with Phoebe during her last year of college, she thought it was true love and he thought it was just sex. He bought her tons of jewelry, thank god because when she got pregnant he had a huge fight with her and insinuated that he wanted her to get rid of it. So, she tripped over her lame cat and lost the baby...not! While in Greece with his father who'd just had a heart attack Jed calls Phoebe and she's gone. He never went after her, apologized, pretends to love her or even show any type of emotion.....what an ass!! He was cold and she was a bore. I hated this book with all the passion that I loved her last book. This book had nothing, no romance, nothing interesting....NADA. I gave it one star and I'm highly overrating it.

There were one or two good parts to this book.

Phoebe was in a relationship with Jed. She finds out she's pregnant and has a few nerves but is also excited. She also thinks her relationship is so close to marriage that she's expecting a ring any day now. So it's pretty casual that she drops the news that she's pregnant. What she didn't expect was the explosion that followed and the shock made Jed tell her exactly what he was thinking of their relationship..or casual sex from his mistress to be more precise.
The hero throws out the general threatening sounding phrase, after announcing he doesn't want children and didn't want her either, that his doctor would "take care of the pregnancy". The heroine jumps to the extremely logical conclusion that the hero wants her to have an abortion. But that's taken care of for him when the heroine has a miscarriage. The hero then placates her, or his conscience with the platitudes of how horrible it is and he'd been planning on marrying her so they could all be a family.
Oh dear, well, Jed just has to leave for the weekend but he'll be back on Monday for them to discuss further. Except he doesn't come back and eventually the heroine calls him on his cell, only to get the secretary. The secretary informs her that she has to do this a lot for Jed's other unwanteds, but he won't come back until Phoebe vacates and the relationship is over.
So years later Jed sees Phoebe somewhere and realizes that she's hiding something from him. A quick investigation, looks like she wasn't that hard to find, turns up that she's got a son who magically looks like him.
Turns out Phoebe had been pregnant for twins and only one had died. Jed wants his son but Phoebe isn't helping out and a consult with his lawyers shows that the only way he has a slim chance of getting guardianship is to get his son back to his own country and battle it out there. Which he spends the rest of the book doing. And in case we didn't get that he was still doing it, we occasionally check in on his thoughts which are still going along the same lines. Throw Phoebe away after he gets his son to his country and can get custody.
Did I mention there were a few good things about this book? I should focus on them. First of all, the writing style. Jacqueline Baird is a good writer. Her stories fail sometimes, but the writing is rarely ever bad.
The first thing I loved, and where I thought this book would shine, is the heroine. She was in a relationship with the hero that she thought was close to marriage. She kept expecting the hero to dish out a ring to her. And she happily announced she was pregnant. Because she was in a solid relationship so it wasn't the most horrible thing to happen to her. I had so much respect for her at this point. She was not sleeping with him in a no strings relationship because she loved him and it was the only way to get him. She thought they were in a relationship. She wasn't scared of what pregnancy would mean because they were in a committed relationship.
Secondly, she stuck around. None of this running away when things don't go as planned. She stayed and talked and after the baby was gone and Jed was being a complete *insert word that Amazon won't let me post* she still stayed around to talk to him. She stayed when he didn't come back and she only left when his secretary told her what was going on.
The third thing is the fact that the heroine was no fool. She didn't want to let her son go out of the country with Jed even though he was the father. She also knew that his threats of custody battles didn't hold much water.
But the problem is big. Jed.
Jed thought he was enjoying some light sex with his little kept woman. When she wound up pregnant his world was crashing down. How dare she become pregnant when he wasn't serious about her. He also made the comment about having his doctor take care of her pregnancy. He later claims that she misunderstood him, but he's pretty thorough, so I doubt it. I'm sure in his devious little brain abortion was high up on his list of do if possibles. Why do I say that? Because when the heroine had a miscarriage, he did a, oh dear we were going to be a family but listen we'll talk about this Monday because I'm going to be somewhere else for the weekend. He didn't really care about the pregnancy or the fact that she had a miscarriage so I'm sure abortion would have been a relief to take care of the baby he doesn't want and the woman he doesn't want to be tied to.
So he has a family emergency but instead of taking the two minutes to call the heroine who had JUST had a miscarriage and explaining why he couldn't make it back, he tracks down his secretary, gives her his cell phone and tells her to call the heroine and tell her what's going on. Because Phoebe basically meant so little to him, that he didn't care enough to take the two minutes to personally call her. And he should have. This is the woman who just had a miscarriage and he left her but his father is in ICU where he can do nothing and can't be there and he refuses to take the two minutes to leave the room and give her a reassuring phone call. That about says it all.
He never looked for her because she certainly wasn't that hard to find, and when he does find her it's pretty much all about getting his son. He doesn't care about Phoebe or even really want her in the picture, just his son. And at the end of the book he claims to have loved her all along? Where? Actions speak louder than words. What actions did he ever do to show that he loved her all along?
And that's where the potential of this book, with the heroine who stands up to things and doesn't just run away, who isn't afraid of the hero's threats, all fails.
Maybe next time.
