About the Author

Karen O’Connor is the Jonathan N. Helfat Distinguished Professor of Political Science and the Founder and Director Emerita of the Women & Politics Institute at American University. Before coming to American University, Karen taught political science for seventeen years at Emory University in Atlanta, GA, where she was the first woman to receive the university’s highest teaching award. She has been recognized by several associations as the most outstanding woman in political science and public administration as well as by the Southern Political Science Association for her contributions to the discipline.  From 2010-2012, she has been selected by The Irish Times as one of the top 100 Irish American lawyers in the United States.

 

Dubbed “the most quoted college professor in the land” by the Wall Street Journal, Larry J. Sabato bridges the gap between the ivory tower and the real world of politics. A Rhodes Scholar, Dr. Sabato has taught more than 15,000 students in his career at Oxford University, Cambridge University, and the University of Virginia. He has received every major teaching award at the University of Virginia, and in 2001, he was named the Thomas Jefferson Award winner. Dr. Sabato is the University Professor of Politics and director of the University of Virginia’s Center for Politics, founded in 1998 to improve civic education and the political process. Alixandra B. Yanus is Assistant Professor of Political Science at High Point University, where she teaches courses in Enduring Questions in Political Science, American Government, and Research Methods. Ruined a good textbook

Received my desk copy today. Here are my first impressions: The 2012 is fifty pages shorter than the 2011 edition. Authors have removed the text of the Constitution and Federalist Papers and placed them under the optional, more costly "mypoliscilab" online. More profit for the publisher I guess. What if you want (as I do) to use the text in class? Also listings of Presidents, Supreme Court Justices and key Supreme Court cases are simply gone. After ten years of use, this will probably be my last semester with this textbook.

The material in this book was presented in an understandable and relatable way. However, the information itself was not well organized, which made it hard to locate information within the text. In addition, MyPoliSci lab is utterly terrible. Half the questions that you are quizzed on aren't even in the book! It's like the creators of this edition were lazy and used questions from previous editions of the book. I'm disgusted with how difficult a simple general education has become thanks to the inconsistency of the material.

This was the exact edition I needed and it was delivered on time. This is a paperback edition of the book that is three hole punched. So you will need a binder to put the book in.

I don't know why there are so many 5-star reviews.

I purchased Learning Pandas based on the steady stream of 5-star reviews here on Amazon, but the reviews completely let me down on this one. I've only started learning Pandas in the past week or so and I find this book way too basic, with little detail. Honestly, at around the page 250 of 480, all you've done is imported data from a CSV file, print rows or columns to screen, deleted and added a column or row. At this point, you still haven't any aggregated or summarized any data yet. In addition, the items covered to that point were not covered in depth.

I did check the Table of Contents before purchasing, but what threw me off were all the 5-star reviews from people who claim it's their job using scientific libraries, or they've been using pandas for awhile. Because of these reviews and the length of the chapters, I though there would be some "comprehensive insights" or "powerful data manipulations" as some reviewer say... some real meat that would be conceptual, comprehensive and/or practical in these pages. But nope, you learn a useless function called "twiceprice" which takes a column of stock prices and multiplies it by 2. What a useless, un-insightful, un-practical example. Most of the examples don't use real life data, he just uses series of a,b,c and 1,2,3.

Practical examples and useful reference content

I've been working with the pandas library for a while but had been looking for a text to help navigate the rich feature set of the pandas library. I purchased this book as soon as it became available and I'm quite satisfied with the content.

I skipped the first few chapters, but if you are new to Python and using Python packages, do be sure to go through the content.

The next couple of chapters discuss the inner workings of pandas DataFrame and Series. Worth going through as it provides a foundation for the remainder of the book's examples.

Around chapter 6 is where the application examples dig in and they are quite useful. I've referred to many of these examples. They include reading and writing data with different data sources, slicing and dicing data and running stats on your data.

Examples towards the end of the book get progressively sophisticated with shaping data. I didn't read everything in those chapters, but towards the end of the book are some chapters on data visualization and working with time series data. Definitely a "must" if you are looking to make use of pandas in your data analysis work.

I keep this ebook in my reference collection and refer to it when in need to figure out how to solve a data issue where pandas might be a good fit. A helpful book in the Python + data space.

getting to know indexes and look-ups

I've been learning pandas for a few months and really looked forward to a new reference. While I've read most of Kinney's book (he started the package) I've found the concepts around indexing and the multiple ways to access data a bit difficult, especially coming from an R/dataframe background. The series and dataframe chapters in Heydt's book clarified a number of things for me about the use of .loc, .loc[] and .ix. I especially got confused with Panda's auto-indexing feature and how if you have an integer index and pass myData[2] you might get the row with the index label 2 or you might get the third row if Pandas added an auto-incrementing index (or your integer index is sorted and complete). I liked the explanation in this book. Pandas is really powerful and while I'll continue to use R/dplyr/etc for many tasks, I'm increasingly finding Pandas and python super useful. Note for GIS applications using Arc, it is relatively easy to move from a filegeodatabase to a numpy array to Pandas and back. This has been great for doing a lot of calculations with really big feature sets.

Between this book and "Be My Baby", Andersen has gone on my automatic buy list. There are very few writers who can pen a hero as well as Andersen. In fact, only Susan Elizabeth Phillips and Linda Howard come to mind.
I was shocked to see some of the bad reviews this book took on this site. "Baby I'm Yours" is a fresh, innovative, sexy, hilarious, light-hearted romantic comedy. If you like to laugh, and if you enjoy reading about feisty, quirky heroines who bring strong, primal males to heel, then this is the book to purchase.
There's nothing quite as nice for a reading enthusiast as finding an author who can make you smile.

Excellent!

I've never read anything by Susan Anderson before, but if "Baby I'm Yours" is an indicator of how she writes, I'll be snapping up all of her books without a second thought. I especially like the cover art on her books. They are snappy and sharp and suit her writing style. I like how Anderson situates normal people like Catherine MacPherson and Sam McKade into her novels and bases her story not on an overly fantastic plot, but more a journey of two people who fall in love. I find that a lot of romance novels get caught up in the setting, regency England, for example and the history of the period and completely lose the characters. Without giving away too much of the novel, this is a writer not to be missed!

A Little Too Much "Romance 101"

While "Baby, I'm Yours" is entertaining enough to hold a reader's attention, there are some passages that appear to have been constructed using a "Guide for Writing Romance". It is absurd for the author to expect us to believe that when a man enters a woman's home and threatens her with a gun, she's going to notice "his strength", yet "Baby, I'm Yours" is full of scenarios in which Catherine, the heroine, notices Sam's physical attributes and inner appeal when she would really be trying to escape his clutches. Yes, this is a romance novel. Yes, we expect conflict and tension between our couple. But in this book, the attraction these two characters feel for one another pops up in places where it should not, giving the book a contrived sense about it. Also, at one point, Catherine has a chance to flee from Sam and just like they must teach in Romance 101 classes, she becomes a silly female and remains stuck in her predicament. The worst we have to face is Catherine's ludicrous request that Sam shoot a spider with the little bit of ammunition they have. Again, we are to find it "precious" that she wants protection from a spider in any old, silly, aren't-I-just-vulnerable?, female way she can get it. There is no depth of character, Sam is an unattractive, bratty male, and her subplots (Kaylee and Bobby; Gary back in Florida) are so much better-woven than the main plot, that one is left starving for those characters to creep back up and take over from the boredom that Catherine and Sam provide. In short, the story is too skeletal: The author hits on all of the Romance 101 keys but leaves us wanting a story we can sink our teeth into.

Few words from a sailor.. about an awesome story.

I haven't finished reading Wolfsong yet, on account of that it arrived today, but I can easily say that within the first chapter I've been hooked!

Lets start at the top, with the writing style.

L. T. Bradley's ability to write is superb, rivalling that of J.R.R. Tolkien and C. S. Lewis(Oh yes fanboys, I went there) She gives detail where it is due, and leaves enough to the imagination. Her ability to create characters is strong, they're all very diverse, but have enough to keep them in common with the story AND each other (Important in my eyes!) And location... picking a not-so-small town out in-the-middle-of-nowhere California was a great choice.

Now on to the book itself

Wolfsong starts out with a very dark, and easy to put to mind beginning, building suspense, and then slowly allowing it to drop back to normal. A few of the events foreshadow others. The Characters interract and seem to know each other(Which makes me hope theres a prequel somewhere later on!)

Please.. for the love of all that is holy... don't stop writing! you're talented and ambitious! As I read your novel I can literally (and figuratively) see how the gears were turning in your head. Keep it up!!

Great Read - hard to put down!

I love supernatural stories and this one delivered. I enjoyed reading about a heroine that isn't a wimp! Zoe rocks! The characters are solid and well thought out. You can tell the writer carefully crafted this novel. It reminds me of the TV series Supernatural. I am a big fan of Supernatural so I'm giving a HUGE compliment here!

This is an exciting and fun read. I enjoyed it and I can say that I'm becoming a fan of L. T. Bradley. I'll definitely be checking out more books written by her.

The only reason I gave this 4 stars instead of 5 was due to the formatting issues. I purchased the Kindle edition and there are a lot of areas that words do not have spaces between them. Also some pages are not formatted correctly. Just needs a bit more proofing is all.

Deeply Moving M/M BDSM!

This deeply moving BDSM from Mike is one absorbing, arousing and stirring read. It is not consumed by sex as in most gay erotica but it is a story with a heart.
Dave is a badly abused victim in a previous BDSM partnership. His suffering at the hands of an abusive and obsessive partner simply tugs at my heart.
Dave needs and certainly deserves to be loved and nurtured and Richard is just the very Dom to do that. The fact that Dave and Richard were former lovers before they broke up and ventured into the BDSM world gives more substance to their later Dom/Sub relationship.
Add to that a tightly paced and gripping plot, Music and Metal is captivating and certaintly this writer's best effot to-date and the title is most fitting.

Richard is at his usual hangout, having a drink, when someone from his past walks in. Years ago Richard didn't know what to do when Dave wanted to be tied up, but Richard's more confident now. He still finds Dave very attractive, and invites him home.

Dave is very happy to see Richard, who he never forgot. When Richard wants to try again, so does he. Unfortunately, Dave has a terrible secret in his past that doesn't want to stay in the past. Will Dave and Richard be able to make it work this time?

Music and Metal was an enjoyable, multi-faceted story. There was romance, BDSM, and suspense. There was also a big shot of melodrama, but even that was enjoyable as it was enough to be interesting without being ridiculous or over-the-top. Normally, BDSM isn't really my thing, but in this book the BDSM was very well-written and came across as loving rather than controlling. Richard was an ideal top in my mind. He liked to be in control, but used his control to increase Dave's pleasure rather than his own. Dave was a flighty musician who was insecure about himself due to horrific events in his past. I liked the way he grew stronger and more self-assured under Richard's care. It was especially admirable given his truly chilling past. The suspense angle of the book was well-done and didn't fizzle out--in fact it ended in a rather explosive climax(which is where the melodrama came in). With hot, tender love scenes, two great heroes, and suspense, Mike Shade has written quite a page-turner!

Very similar to Sean Michael's BDSM books

Rating: 8/10

PROS:
- Similarities between this and Sean Michael's writing are obvious by the second page: the choppy writing style, the uber confident and possessive Dom, the frenetic sub. Since I love Michael's Hammer books, I had a feeling right off the bat that I would at least like this one, if not love it. (see cons below also)
- The characters are open with other about their pleasure, and there are some incredibly sweet moments. During their first scene, Dave admits to Richard that he's not sure he has a soul anymore, and Richard responds, "Sh. We'll find it, Dave."
- I love Richard. His favorite thing to do for his subs is pamper them in whatever way they want him to, whether that means with pain, with simple touching, with kissing, whatever. He's completely focused on Dave right from the start. He's not perfect, but whenever he makes a mistake, he's quick to admit it and then fix it.
- There's an aspect in the relationship that's new to me (that is, I haven't encountered it in any other BDSM books I've read): Dave, the sub, hums and sings while they're in a scene. He's a professional musician, so that makes sense, but I loved how the music connects the two characters. Dave can't keep from singing, and Richard loves hearing him.

CONS:
- The book is maybe a little TOO similar to Michael's BDSM stories in some ways. The plot in this story is very similar to that of Between Friends: Sammy's Place; the characters have not just the same BASIC characteristics as Michael's characters, but many of the same specific character traits, as well; and even some of the character names are the same (granted, Ollie and Killian are the villains here, and they're good guys in the Hammer books). I just got the feeling I'd read most of it before.
- I grew tired of how often Richard uses the word "baby" when he's talking to Dave.

Overall comments: If you've read many of Sean Michael's BDSM stories, this one is likely to seem like an imitation. I liked the book quite a bit, but the writing style is something that I would call an acquired taste. It's probably 70% sex, most of it kinky (nothing TOO severe, just bondage and light pain games).

An Awesome Reaource & Must Have

Such an awesome resource!! A lot of this could be considered "common sense" but when you are in a marriage relationship for any period of time (in my experience) you tend to miss the obvious! So thankful for this and the other books put together by author Nina Roesner. Her books and studies have been life changing for me and my marriage relationship!
