Good Summary of the Benefits of Fresh Thinking

This book's subject is the popularized version of the business concept of management process design. Making that concept more accessible is a very useful contribution. The downside of this book is that many people have assumed that it teaches you everything you need to know to do management process design, or to reengineer key processes. That, alas, is not true. If you find the subject of process design or reengineering to be of interest, I suggest that you first read James Champy's excellent book, REEENGINEERING MANAGEMENT. That book is a good template for how to make any beneficial change in an organization, including reengineering. Then, if you want to get fired up to make major changes, use REENGINEERING THE CORPORATION as a way to create passion about the subject for yourself. But do remember, you may not even have all the processes you need, so reengineering is not the only answer. For example, what is the management process that your company uses to improve its stock market valuation? If you are like most, you do not even have an effective process for stock price enhancement. So be sure to see if you have processes where they will do you the most good.

Though old concepts, it is an easy read and a solid tool.

"Reengineering the Corporation" was THE management book for the early to mid 90's. Many companies, including my own, adopted the Reengineering philosophy. The book implants basic management principles of process redesign. Specifically, the book encourages business leaders to examine their core processes (e.g. the order fulfillment process). Then, starting with a clean sheet of paper, the book encourages a redesign of those processes to their maximum efficiency. A critical theme throughout the book was employee ownership of processes.

In fairness to those that have been involved in process redesign, Hammer and Champy's book does not introduce new management concepts. Rather, it packages the process redesign concept very nicely.

The book is a very easy read, including many examples of companies that have successfully reenginered core processes.

I would recommend this book to two groups. If you are a manager unfamiliar with process redesign or Total Quality Management, I would recommend this book for you. If you are a student studying business, I would strongly recommend this book. As an MBA student, I have used quotes from this book on numerous occasions.

On a final note, James Champy does admit in a later publication, that reengineering has failed in many companies (Reengineering Management). But, the concepts are sound and the examples are moving.

Overall, it is a solid business tool.

Some great ideas, but not thoroughly thought-out

This book has some great ideas, particularly the idea to take a fresh look at processes. For any established process, it's likely that enough has changed since the process was born that the process is no longer the best way to get from the beginning to the result. This book is well written and easy to read and the examples are especially useful in illustrating the major benefits of reengineering.
Unfortunately, many of points are not as well-thought out. For example, the book advocates building teams around discrete processes but fails to realize that this just moves companies from horizontal silos to vertical silos. These vertical silos cause different but still serious problems. Also, the book mentions the critical role of Information Technology, but fails to realize that they can often lead reengineering efforts because if they have a solid knowledge of the business and new technologies they are in the best position to see the new possibilities. Another confusing area is that book indicates certain problems that should be overcome in an initial reengineering project such as functional departments and lack of understanding of reengineering continue to be problems for subsequent reengineerings.
Many of the questions that are not answered in this book are answered in John Case's "Open-Book Management". Open-Book Management and Reengineering have many things in common including empowered workers, performance measured by results, and coaching managers, but Open-Book management does a much better job of explaining what really drives these changes and how they can best be aligned.

How to draw Manga - Short & Sweet

This is a beginners’ book. I never thought that drawing would be this easy before reading this book. I have learnt to draw different characters also (other than Manga) just by modifying here and there. I especially liked the “How to draw mouth & nose” chapter as it clearly portrays how to draw microexpressions for different emotions. As I am an ardent fan of learning and applying “Body Language” along with “Microexpressions”, this chapter really was a game-changer for me. My suggestion for anyone who reads this book would be - start reading this book with a pencil and a paper. Start drawing right from chapter one. Apply what you learn. Modify slightly and see how your character shapes up differently. It is really a thrill to create characters on your own.

My second favourite chapter is “How to draw male characters.” All these days, I used to try for umpteen times to sketch every super-hero as possible without success. The outlines, measurements and proportions taught in this book really blew me away. It made me realize how simple drawing really is. All that you need to learn are only the first few basic precautions which are taught lucidly and persuasively in this book. It would have been better if even more skeletal opening drawings were given. Would have been really great if step-by-step drawings were added to all the depicted figures. Hope an update to this ebook with more opening skeletal framework drawings is on the anvil.

Very helpful

My son has been trying to sketch manga characters, but didn't really have a good guide to help him. This book on how to draw manga provided him with the guidelines on proportions, style, shapes, and key features to make his artwork look like manga characters. The bonus chapter on Dragon Ball Z excited him so much that he is trying to perfect it. The written directions and visual examples are good for beginners like him.

Angelina did a good job on how to draw good manga. It’s not every time that one can find tutorial as good as this. The pictures used in the book are all exceptional and gives you clear idea on the written instructions. For anyone who wants to take this as his/her hobby then they must have this book. It’s the best that I have ever seen on this topic.

James Bond Archives: Spectre Ed.

[[VIDEOID:d890050fa8c9373e16e6bdf62326ab8d]]"The James Bond Archives" is a must-read for fans of the Bond film franchise. This latest edition, edited by Paul Duncan and published by Taschen, is updated and expanded to include new material from the latest film "Spectre".

The book, which contains over 600 pages, does into great detail about each and every bond film to date. In the introduction, it is stated that the editor was given access to more than 100 filing cabinets of production documentation and over one million photos in his effort to compile this book. There have been 24 films over a span of 50+ years, and there is so much information about the films, the stars, and the productions that will be of interest to fans.

The text reads sort of like a journal. The author provides relevant information about each movie in chronological order - this ranges from the earliest notions of the film; to principal photography; to editing and the finishing touches; and of course concluding with the film's release. Also included is dialogue from key creatives on the film - in most cases the director, the producers, as well as members of the cast and crew.

For example, the newest chapter for "Spectre" begins with information about a rights dispute regarding the name SPECTRE and the character Blofeld, before moving on to the the complexities of the production. Main commentary is intercut with pieces from director Sam Mendes, co-star Dave Bautista, and production designer Dennis Gassner, among others.

All of this is enhanced with something like 1,000 images. This includes title designs, photos from on-set/location, concept art, etc. The behind-the-scenes pictures are the most interesting because it gives you a peek behind the curtain of what it's like to make a Bond film. Recently it has become more popular for filmmakers and studios to let fans in on their process, but that wasn't always the case - which makes the photos and information included on some of the earlier films such as "Dr. No" and "Goldfinger" all the more valuable.

Some of the information will be of particular interest to filmmakers (or those interested in the process), because every production has it's ups and downs - and to the author's credit the book doesn't shy away from the many problems encountered. But the book also celebrates that which makes a Bond film unique - the cars, the guns, the girls, the stunts, etc. It's really a fascinating look inside the making of James Bond both old and new; and it is fun to see how the movies and the character change over the decades.

A quality franchise like Bond deserves a great book like this one, and I'm happy to own it.

Know which book you're buying, Spectre Edition cost less for a reason PLEASE read description carefully.

First off this is a great book, if you are a Bond fan this this is a must own, but if you are a real Bond you'll own Both copies because there are some differences between the two books other than the price $52 for the Spectre Edition and depending where you get the original Edition $130, except for the Spectre information the books have all the same information and all the pages up to that are the same, here's where things change up a bit the Spectre Edition is smaller...quite a bit smaller 10x13 and 8 pounds compared to 12.5x19 and 16 pounds the Original Edition comes with a Brown Cardboard carrying case, The cover material is different the Original Edition has a tight Alligator print compared to a smooth cover and both books the corners and spine are covered in a black canvas, The Original Edition also comes with a 35mm film strip (I got Dr. NO), The one problem I have with both books is they needed to be two volumes and needed a sleeve to keep the book in (there is something about a book when it comes with it own sleeve which helps with presentation). If you have never seen the original then the Spectre Edition is AWESOME because you can't miss what you didn't know about, if you prefer a smaller book, this one handles better I was half way finished with the first book but could only really read it in the living room or my office, this Edition I can read in bed (it's still big and a little heavy) but overall I glad I got it I do plan on keeping bot copies, I hope that they figure out a way to add the next few films without having to reprint the whole book over again

This is currently my favorite Bond book

My rating is five stars for the content of the book, I am a big Bond fan and have many books on Bond and own all the films. This is currently my favorite Bond book. I agree with the reviews of the book regarding its content. I've read the book almost cover to cover and there is so much information I have learned about the making of the films from those involved, Produces, Directors, Actors, Photographers, Stunt Men, etc. I have never seen most of the hundreds of the photographs in the book which was a real treat. It made me watch about a dozen of the films again!

One star rating for the quality of the binding. As a book collector who owns over 3,000 books and about a third of them large books on Art, Architecture and Photography I can tell you that beside content, there are three important aspects to an oversized book: Binding, Print Quality and Paper Quality. This book fails miserably on the quality of the binding as the signatures (groups of pages) are glued into the spine and not sewn. A big no no with a book this heavy and this large and with this many pages. The binding should have been sewn and not glued. Not only that, cheap glue was used that did not adhere to the signatures with the result that the book began to fall apart as I was reading it carefully on a flat surface. The glued binding will not take the stress of being left open. By the time I got to "The Living Daylights" several signatures were already loose. I suspected by the time I would finish the book, they would fall out. There is no way this book will stand up to repeated viewing or reading. Disappointing and not acceptable!

I own about fifty Taschen Art and Architecture Books, among them such heavyweights such as "Diego Rivera: The Complete Murals" and "Joan Blaeu Atlas Maior 1655" which have sewn bindings and which I have perused many times with no problems with the bindings. The James Bond Archive was printed and bound in China and the quality is inferior. I contacted Taschen, informed them of the problem and sent them photos which I have attached to this review. They sent me a return label and a replacement copy so they do stand behind their product, but this took me time to write several emails, pack the book, go to the UPS office, track the shipment, etc. and I was without the book for almost two weeks. The replacement copy does not seem to have this problem (yet) but I am very careful the way I handle the book.

It is my hope that my book was the one bad apple in the barrel, but I want all potential buyers to beware of this potential problem! This is why I gave this a three star rating overall, five stars for content and one star for binding! Also a big hassle having to contact Taschen, packing the book, dropping it off at the UPS Office, tracking the shipment to and from Taschen, etc.

Thorough and neutral

An incredibly thorough and integrative literature review and analysis on the question of why we have religion. On debated issues the author simply presents both sides and lets the user decide. The answer to the question is of course "we don't know" but the intellectual journey is an essential one for anyone even vaguely interested in this age old question. The book is somewhat dated of course as there has been much work on this issue since 1966 but it still remains useful literature review of the foundational works.

The story of America’s earliest extant play begins with a petty crime—a crime that would have passed largely unnoticed had it not been for one fact: it prompted a beleaguered royal governor of one of Britain’s colonies to lash out at his enemies by writing a biting satire. Androboros, A Bographical [sic] Farce in Three Acts (1715), is universally acknowledged as the first play both written and printed in America. Its significance stems not simply from its publication but from its eventual impact. The play inadvertently laid the foundation for one of the defining rights of the nation that would eventually emerge some seventy-five years later—the First Amendment of the Constitution of the United States, guaranteeing a free press and freedom of expression.

Androboros was not just the first of its kind, it was also ahead of its time in many ways, preceding the harsh political satires and farces of the later eighteenth century by some fifty years. Such plays served a small but essential role in promoting political thought among the colonists. Written by anonymous authors and passed from hand to hand, these short, crude, and often bawdy plays and dialogues were rarely acted due to their inflammatory lampoonery. Nevertheless, they provided an opportunity for disgruntled colonists to vent their grievances and promote their ideas to fellow citizens. The farces of the late eighteenth century drove home the meaning and message of the American Revolution.

Equally significant is that Androboros may have influenced a few of the key political discourses published in the 1730s, and these works in turn may well have shaped the future of the American political landscape for the next several decades and even into the modern era. But as a closet drama intended only to be read by close friends and political supporters, this play has languished as a minor footnote in American intellectual history. Scholarly research published to date has been, for the most part, inadequate and occasionally inaccurate. This study remedies that oversight, providing a full analysis as well as an annotated typescript and facsimiles of the original printing.

About the Author
Peter A. Davis is an associate professor of theatre at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he chairs the Theatre Studies program and is director of graduate studies. He specializes in the economic and cultural history of theatre in early America and eighteenth-century England. His articles and reviews have appeared in most of the major theatre history journals. He was also a contributor to the Cambridge History of the American Theatre, winner of the 1999 Barnard Hewitt Award from the American Society for Theatre Research. He is a professional actor and director, and is an ensemble member with the award-winning Remy Bumppo Theatre Company of Chicago. He lives in Chicago, Illinois.

PreS-Gr 2—Monty is a slender, sinewy lion with a thick, red-gold mane. His meerkat friends like to play with it, tugging and tickling him until he "rumbles, grumbles, and rolls." Unfortunately his mane gets dirty and matted, and the efforts of the meerkats to restore its former splendor with braids and feathers only irritate Monty. He storms off to look at his reflection in the water hole and is lured closer by a crocodile's honeyed words. Monty barely escapes the fearsome jaws that bite a hunk out of his mane. Running for home, he realizes too late that he has led the crocodile straight to his little friends. "Even though the meerkats mess up Monty's mane sometimes, he can't let the crocodile eat them!" In a magnificent vertical spread the lion roars. The terrified croc flees, and Monty's friends are saved. O'Neill's mixed-media artwork uses bits of maps on the lion's paws, the crocodile's scales, and the birds' wings. The jungle itself is minimally evoked by green scribbles and leaf fragments, while the brown water where the crocodile lurks is strewn with bones and fish skeletons. Little ones will enjoy the animated scenes, the threatening but ineffectual crocodile, and a vertical two-page spread that deliciously illustrates the lion's mighty, capitalized "ROARS!" The colorful illustrations are enhanced by tiny scraps of newsprint and maps. The tried-and-true fable about curbing vanity and appreciating friends enjoys a fresh touch with these ebullient African animals.

Monty's Mane Attraction

Monty the lion has a splendid mane and some good friends who admire him. When Monty goes to get a drink he encounters danger then responds in a very fierce way while protecting his friends. A great story for the pre-school set and the illustrations are truly magnificent.

Magnificent illustrations

Summary: Monty the lion usually lets his meerkat friends play with his magnificent mane. But one day they go too far with their braiding and decorating, and Monty has had enough. He stomps off to the water hole, where a crocodile lures him closer by complimenting him on his fabulous mane. The crocodile tries to take a bite, but only gets a mouthful of mane. Monty runs away, the crocodile in hot pursuit, only to realize too late that he’s led the crocodile right to the meerkats. With a tremendous “ROAR!”, Monty scares off the crocodile, and is happy to let his friends play in his mane once again.

Pros: A nice story about friendship and loyalty, with magnificent illustrations. The two-page spread of Monty’s roar may be suitable for framing.

Cons: I read this to several classes of kindergarteners and they seemed a bit lukewarm about it. The pictures are better than the story.

Gorgeous illustrations, lots of M words, and a beautiful head of hair that becomes a dilemma. Great story!

SUMMARY: Monty loves his magnificent mane of hair very much. So much, that when the meerkats compliment him on his hair, Monty lets them play in it. Until they make a mess of it that is. They try to fix their mistake, but Monty is not happy. He goes down to the water to admire his hair. There he runs into a ferocious creature that chases Monty back to where the meerkats are, putting them in danger. Monty stands his ground and protects the meerkats--even if they mess up his mane sometimes.

ILLUSTRATIONS: The illustrations were created in mixed media. They are larger than life, full of color, full of movement and life! I especially love the two page spread of Monty's roar. Absolutely gorgeous.

THE GOOD: This is a wonderful moral story about being a friend when it counts the most and letting unimportant things go when they don't really matter. The crocodile took a chomp out of Monty's hair because of his vanity, but in the end it didn't matter because he was able to protect his friends. There are also a lot of M words which would make it a great book for classroom use when learning the letter M.
THE NOT AS GOOD: The story lacks a bit of development that would make it even better. It comes to the conclusion with a piece or two of background story missing. The parts with the crocodile may be too scary for the youngest children.

AGE RECOMMENDATION: Ages 4-7

Richard Wortman continues his unrivaled inquiry into the lavish ceremonies and celebrations of the Russian imperial court, revealing the myths, symbols, and rituals that were central to monarchical rule. In this volume, he explores the presentations and representations of tsarist power under the last three emperors--Alexander II, Alexander III, and Nicholas II--who faced increasing social pressures from modernizing forces. Coronations, funerals, the blessing of the waters, parades as well as art, architecture, and the printed word all captured the mental worlds of these men and showed how they understood the empire they ruled. Wortman describes the evolution of their scenarios during their upbringing and the early years of their reign, making clear how these symbolic settings defined their policies and goals.


The author finds that the last Russian tsars adapted the myth of the transcendent Western emperor to cope with the challenges of liberalism, nationalism, and democracy. They made use of historical celebrations, the press, art, literature, and films to disseminate their images as popular, national monarchs. Alexander III and Nicholas II presented themselves increasingly as the embodiment of the Russian people, rather than the all-Russian emperor governing a multi-ethnic empire--an image perpetuated by Peter the Great. This new means of appeal, Wortman argues, by presenting the tsar as sole representative of the Russian people, enabled him to sustain his determination to counter the Duma and to restore his autocratic privileges.

Welcome to the weird world of Russian monarchism

How to summarize the history of the Romanov dynasty? Well, Peter "the Great" murdered his son, Catherine "the great" murdered her husband, and Alexander "the Blessed" was complicit in the murder of his father. After that the dynasty went into a bit of a decline. For the past two decades historians have been increasingly interested in the world of monarchist ritual. They have looked at how during the nineteenth century these rituals became more, not less, elaborate and they have pondered on the use of these rituals as examples of aristocratic hegemony. Wortman's well written and well documented second volume looks at the Russian version from the ascension of Alexander II in 1855 to the abdication of Nicholas II. We certainly get a lot of information on the elaborate ceremonies of the monarchy. We learn of the elaborate rituals and liturgies of the coronation ceremonies, along with fulsome and increasingly sycophantic paeans from the ranks of Orthodoxy. We are in a world of great popular feasts for the people, "entertained by acrobats, jugglers, stunt riders, and carousel rides," which comes to its horrible climax when at least 1,500 people are trampled to death on the feast festivals of Khodynka at the coronation of Nicholas II, the direct result of tsarist incompetence. We enter the world of elaborate balls, and the exquisite detail of faberge eggs (one designed to look like Assumption Cathedral). We see new strains in royalist propaganda as Alexander III presents a nationalist and orthodox message, while Nicholas II presents a Victorian and domestic picture of his family. Rather revealingly Wortman quotes Tchaikovsky's contempt for the 1812 Overture that he composed for Alexander III's coronation.
But there is a larger point in Wortman's account. Much of the literature on royal power deals with its ability to dazzle the larger population. Increasingly, however, royal ritual only dazzled its monarchs. Alexander II starts off with the "scenario of love." After the (partial) emancipation of the peasantry, Alexander II increasingly emphasized his "loving" and "benevolent" nature, as if his self-professed amiability automatically deserved to be reciprocated. As it happened Alexander II's marriage was visibly crumbling as he carried on with a much younger woman. At the same time Alexander moved away from a western path of development, he also sought to ignore what laws and regulations existed to force the rest of the nobility to accept his paramour as his second empress.
Alexander III's reign saw an emphasis on an increasingly chauvinist vision of Russia and Russian orthodoxy, with a new emphasis on monarchies and cathedrals. There was a weird, increasingly unreal and almost necrophiliac admiration for 17th century Moscow, before the liberal rot had set in under Peter I. There was a new emphasis on miracle as the country moved towards a military dictatorship. Nicholas II believed in all these ideas and more, but whereas Alexander III relied on the army and the dictatorship, Nicholas increasingly deluded himself into believing that he had a direct relationship with the Russian people. In this increasingly mystic view in which the "real" Russian people gave him their complete and unequivocal support, Nicholas II viewed the bureaucracies, the army, the episcopacy, other politicians simply as barriers to the implementation of his own will.
As a result during his rituals Nicholas II never missed an opportunity to demean the Duma, the parliament he had reluctantly allowed after the 1905 revolution and which he was planning to emasculate before war broke out in 1914. Nicholas became obsessed with "holy men" who supposedly represented the Russian people, and he and his wife shamelessly bullied the Orthodox hierarchy in order to declare one of them a saint. Reading reports from his bribed press, easily impressed by the crowds who flocked to the anniversaries and royal tours, Nicholas had deluded himself into believing that he was one with the Russian people. Becoming commander in chief of the army against the advice of almost all his ministers, by the end of his reign Nicholas could no longer count on the army, or the church, or the conservatives in his rigged parliament, or most of his family, indeed on anyone other than his wife and children. And yet he was outraged after his abdication that his brother Michael might speak hesitatingly of a constitutional monarchy. The emphasis on Victorian domestic harmony was an illusion; Wortman clearly shows that any chance Russia had of moving on towards a non-revolutionary modernity was fatally hampered by its monarch with a seventeenth century soul.

History clouded by interpretive theory

As is often the case with Western scholars writing on things Russian, one simply cannot properly understand Russia -- culturally or politically -- without first understanding Byzantium and Eastern Orthodoxy. Russia is a heir to Byzantium, and Orthodoxy determined and shaped its culture. Mr. Wortman tends to treat his subject as if he were part anthropologist, part literary theorist, part psychologist -- all premised on the assumption that the idea of Monarchy itself was and is simply a "forest of symbols", as arbitrary in its connection to any sort of transcedental meaning as any other "system. This betrays the disease of modern academia: political systems are mere ideologies, constructions that mask power. To ignore the theology of the Orthodox Church and the various writings both in Greek and Russian on Monarchy is an oversight to say the least. To try and psychologize or play with semiotics as a way to unmask the Russian Monarchy is bad history. The Czar and the Church represented the two heads of the double eagle inheritted from Byzantium. One head -- the Czar -- protected the Kingdom and the Faith from foreign invaders and preserved a Christian Kingdom in rule and law; the Church -- the other head of the eagle -- tended to man's salvation and his soul. These two heads worked synergistically. This is the essence of the Russian Monarchy: the Czar's role cannot be separated from his duty to God and the Church.
