It can happen!

I loved this book. I lost my beloved dog in March. It was totally surreal that she could be gone. She was almost 14 and was extremely gifted, devoted, smart and even became somewhat famous for her musical abilities. I started to notice similar feelings and perceptions like Gail did. In my case I felt compelled to research my dogs pedigree for some reason and found out she was an old time Aussie working dog from a long line of champion working dogs.i never knew this because I had just filed her AKC paper the breeder had given me when she was a pup. It made sense because of how extraordinarily gifted she was. It felt like she was telling me that she wanted to come back but only if she could have the same bloodlines so that those same abilities would be bred in her. . As I continued my research I kept getting more signs and signals along the way pointing me to the way ( how, where , etc.) she is going to come back. I now know she is coming back and soon! Gail had great advice on how to approach this journey and I didn't read her book till after all these things happened but found so many thing she was saying in the book to be true for me. It is real to me that it happens.

Yes he can.

I am a male in my late 40s this is only the second book I have read cover to cover in my Adult life. As I read it I had already had many of the steps put in place, when my greif of the loss of my beautiful pup became to much I would read a few more chapters. This book has helped me and calmed my sole. A true account of what I felt when I Googled "Can my dog reincarnate" I now know he can and I am not crazy. Thank you Gail.

Love the way she writes, love the topic and love the result. My beloved dog Lola died almost 2 weeks ago and this book helps a lot with the grieving process and it gives me hope and a light in this darkness i'm currently in!

The Absolutely True Review of a Part-Time Teacher

It seems that this book is very polarizing. This appears to be due to its treatment of sensitive issues surrounding religion and faith, race, disability, and debates raging around abuse and neglect, among other subjects.

Having taught high schoolers and college students, I found this book to be an accurate representation of the way young people perceive and relate to the world around them. Alexie touches on serious subjects, like race, gender, class, discrimination, disability, death, and family, simultaneously with his teenaged narrator's wit and humor, particularly in Ellen Forney's cartoons and caricatures. While some of this humor is crass, it is not inappropriate; nor is it any different from the way young people talk amongst themselves.

While I thought this novel could have spent more time dissecting and analyzing all of these issues (hence the lower rating), I must disagree with assessments that this subject matter is inappropriate or lascivious for middle and high schoolers. While it may not be appropriate for every pre-teen and teen to read, it is not pornographic or tasteless. Alexie, through his narrator, Junior, discusses what it means to be a young adult caught between two worlds. He does so in a way that does not omit, censor or make light of the less savory elements of puberty: his perceptions are honest and accurate. He and his friends communicate and experience life in a way that is not always "appropriate;" they discuss alcoholism, teen sexuality and disability in the same way that teenagers who are trying to find their place in the world do: as seriously as possible, and as humorously as possible when seriousness fails.

It is doing a disservice to teens to paint a picture of life that is always appropriate; life is not always appropriate. When your family struggles with alcoholism and poverty, or your loved ones die, or your friends deal with eating disorders or physical ailments they are unable to control, or your future, and that of those around you, is limited by forces beyond your control, life is not appropriate. This novel attempts to deal with the realities of life in a way that is imperfect and developing, but relatable and real despite all that.

Absolutely Wonderful!

This is the first book I have read by Sherman Alexie but it won't be the last. Based on some of his own experiences, Alexie tells the story of Arnold Spirit (Junior), born poor and hydro cephalic. Despite these obvious disadvantages, Junior grasps life for all it's got, making the most of what little he has been given. He attends school off the "res" which opens new doors for him despite making him feel somewhat disloyal to his roots. He literally lives between the world of his tribe and the world of the white man.
Alexie does not stand on a soap box proclaiming the wrongs done to his people but with a subtle touch, interweaves that history and its consequences for the first Americans into his narrative. Through his characters Junior and Rowdy, he explores the choice to stay or go.
This book is eloquent, beautifully written, thought provoking, and above all, honest.

Alexie Writes of That Which He Knows

My wife bought this book because it deals with a tribe of Native Americans close to home. Alexie is a member of the Spokane tribe writes about himself as a young man who is a bit of a cartoonist. He leaves the reservation "The Rez" to deal with himself. He knows that in order to succeed, staying is not an option. Going from the Rez to a redneck school, Arnold - better known as Junior - becomes the only Native American other than the comical school mascot.

This book hits home about the real world and real life among Native Americans. The options are: Stay on the Rez with the status quo or move out to "white man's land" and become part of that society. Covering as a light comedy, this book offers insight to the reader that isn't normally given. Sherman Alexie writes as though he's been there - that's because he has.

A good intro to case based learning

As an undergraduate instructor teaching pre-professionals, I find this book to be a good starting place to approach case based learning. There are some shortcomings of the book (some advanced knowledge is required that is normally not present in undergrads), but if you are looking for a good theory into application text this is as good a starting place as any. I especially like the endocrinology questions as they are multi-system in nature and give a good overview of the complex nature of hormone/system communication.

No, they won't make a loser appeal into a winner, but like wearing a decent suit to court, or polishing your shoes, it's one less detriment and one more benefit. Butterick's point, and mine, is that there's no good reason not to do it as well as it can be done. About the Author
Matthew Butterick got his degree in design and typography from Harvard. He began his career as a font designer in Boston. At the beginning of the Internet era, Butterick started Atomic Vision, a website-design company in San Francisco. Later, he attended UCLA law school and became a member of the California bar. In 2012, Butterick received the Legal Writing Institute s Golden Pen Award for Typography for Lawyers. Butterick's other projects include Practical Typography, an online book (practicaltypography.com), the fonts Equity, Concourse, Triplicate, and Advocate, and Pollen, software for publishing electronic books (pollenpub.com). Butterick lives in Los Angeles with his wife Jessica and Roxy the boxer.

Lawyer? Ingest this.

There are two things lawyers use daily: a chair and a word processor. Smart lawyers get comfortable with both. For me, adjusting my chair is straightforward. Adjusting my word processor (and my word processing habit) is not.

Butterick helps you make the adjustment from the typewriter rules that you learned in school. As a result, your documents will have predictable style. Your document's style will clearly guide your reader. Will this make your document more persuasive? Yes, with surprisingly little work.

If you are still not sure whether you should buy this book, just spend a little time at the companion website: typographyforlawyers.com. The advantages of the book over the website are three: better guidance for choosing a professional font, more examples of before/after, and word processor specific advice. The only thing missing is CLE credit.

Finally, I spent about 2 hours on the website and 4 hours with the book. This included the time spent modifying my default templates, fiddling with word processor defaults, buying & installing fonts, and incorporating the advice into my workflow. Looking at documents that I create now, I feel great about the return on the time invested.

Indispensable

ESSENTIAL BOOK FOR ALL WRITERS
Believe it or not, I was not going to write a review for this book. I really do not know how or why I select the few books that I do to review. The exception, however, is TYPOGRAPHY FOR LAWYERS by Matthew Butterick. I am writing this review for those interested in improving the quality of their writing. As for myself, this book has changed (improved) everything with my writing. All of my documents—memos, marketing materials, letters, motions—have been improved because of this treasure. I frequently use two books: (1) The Redbook by Garner and (2) Typography for Lawyers by Butterick. I truly do not know how to say it other than as plainly and clearly as possible: indispensable. No amount of praise could do this book justice.

Butterick's guidance on line spacing, fonts, and point sizes, among other things, is excellent. I do not necessarily always agree with Butterick—margins, tabs, line length, three-level decimals (as pointed out by Garner in the foreword). But my disagreements are few. It is not that he is "wrong"; it is just that I disagree with some of his rules. Nevertheless, I did break my habit of using two spaces after sentences.

I also disagree with Butterick that "implementing good typography is often a chore and a bore" (p. 165). It has been fun, and the end product of better documents is its own reward.

PRACTICAL TIPS
Butterick does quite an extraordinary job of providing clear, practical tips on how to improve your writing. He provides the specific steps for all of the major word-processing platforms. Everything from boldface to italics to apostrophes to kerning is explained with specific, practical information to implement improvements in your writing immediately. I could elaborate further, but I defer to Butterick's website. The website provides free content and samples for you to take a look at. In other words, Butterick does not simply explain what improvements you should implement; he shows you how.

PROFESSIONAL WRITING REQUIRES KNOWLEDGE OF TYPOGRAPHY
I must say that there is a certain … presentation to the practice of law. That is, our writing requires a certain professionalism—more so than other professions. If you are an attorney, you want your documents to exceed expectations in professionalism and readability. Butterick will teach you how to achieve that.

UNLEARN LAW SCHOOL
Butterick does not mention it. But I will. The legal writing "skills" that future lawyers acquire and develop in law school are detrimental to their practice. Lawyers tend to think that everything we write is important, and we therefore put EVERYTHING IN CAPS AND BOLDFACE. But the caps and boldface actually ensure that people will quickly read through or ignore such text altogether, thereby defeating the very purpose of caps and boldface.

SUGGESTION TO BUTTERICK: FORM BOOK
Butterick should write a form book. Draft a book with many and varied examples with different formatting, fonts, etc. Provide a website, as with this book, and let people download examples in different formats that meet the requirements of different jurisdictions.

BOOK IS TOO CHEAP
I never thought of this before about any book, but this is the first underpriced book that I have ever read—in my life. And the irony is that I vacillated when trying to decide if I should purchase this book or not. Perhaps the reason why I reluctantly wrote a review for this book is that I am not sure I want too many people to get a hold of this book. How else am I to distinguish my writing if everyone reads this book and makes improvements? It is actually pretty amazing how much improvement can be made to your writing by implementing the points in the book.

A fanastic resource for attorneys and others

This book gives great guidance on everything from how to format dashes to how to find the ideal line spacing. Another interesting feature is an annotated guide to the pros and cons of various fonts. The author even offers alternatives to Times New Roman and other popular fonts that the Seventh Circuit and other courts have criticized.

One of the most interesting observations comes at the end, where the author notes that the bland, homogenous appearance of most filings stems not from court rules but from the "bandwagon effect." Butterick encourages lawyers to explore instead the "typographical latitude" that nearly all courts allow. The endgame, he reminds us, is to make filings readable, if not enjoyable.

I also appreciated the hints on letterhead and business cards, Bryan Garner's witty foreword, and the author's pervasive passion for his subject.

All in all, a terrific resource that is sure to become the definitive guide to typography in the legal profession and perhaps beyond.

You need it.

Great book. I have the Amaden-Crawford already and think it is a very good draping book. This one is , in my opinion, even better (not that the CAC one is bad).

First : The book begins with all the basics. Tools, fabric weaving, grain, marking style line, a quick reminder about facings and buttoned extensions etc...

Then : How to prepare the figure, with tape over the bust, lines, how to analyse and see the figure if working on a person instead of a dressform. Basic measurements that helps as guides

And finally comes the draping process. For the basic set (basic bodice, skirt and sleeve) They are both quite identical in result. The technic differs a little though. I tend to prefer the way HJA pins ease "fold" while draping : one of my major issue in draping is ease ('cause I've draped for several years by myself molding gowns and bustiers before getting into draping eased garment as dress and tailored jackets...)
But for the 2 darts bodice I really like the way CAC adds a grainline in the center of her princess panel. This really helped me.

I really like that she proposes 2 attachable arms the relaxed (for classic sleeves) and the straight arm (for raglans and kimonos).

The people owning her book on patternmaking will encounter some already known styles (I don't know if it's the same for CAC, I only have her draping book). And as on the drafting book you'll find a really consequent amount of styles to drape.

A beautiful, practical how-to

While this book is quite expensive because it is a textbook, it is worth every penny to the advanced sewer who is beyond alterations to ready-made patterns but needs specific concrete instructions on how to drape their own designs. Despite the glamorous cover, the book is practical and straightforwardly organized. Fully-illustrated, it clearly walks you through draping every imaginable garment, one component at a time. You do have to be working off an actual body or a dressform, as this is draping to personalized fit, not pattern-making to industry specs. If you have not mastered garment construction the book will be over your head. It truly sticks to the topic of draping and design. There are many aspects of making original clothing which are not covered, from fabric selection to couturier construction techniques. This is not an advanced sewing manual. It is about draping and I can't imagine it being more clear or thorough on that topic. Invaluable for the new designer. If only it came with Tim Gunn to offer constructive critiques as you worked...

Buyer beware

I've had this book for about a month and it is already falling apart. For the price I paid for this book, this shouldn't be happening. I've asked other classmates and they've all said the same thing. My rating reflects that of my disappointment. As for the book itself, it's okay but I wouldn't say it's the greatest book for beginners. I agree with a past reviewer that said this book is best used with an instructor.

the truth about this book

I am Dr. Jerry G Knox BA, DC, the author of this book. I am a licensed chiropractic physician with more than 24 years of clinical practice, most of this time offering colonic irrigation, barium enemas and other colon work. This book and all the other free offerings I have put up on line are based on these 24 years of practice and 11 years of fully accredited college and university education in the sciences. This book is a book intended to help others understand their feelings, and know that they are worthwhile people. It was not written for profit. it was written to help others!
If you have any questions about the book, you have two chapters from it as well as articles on health issues such as candida, irritable bowel sydrome, constipation, cancer, child birth and colds and flu that can improve peoples lives but are not based on making money for doctors or pill pushing companies. All this is on the web at [...] I know I am constantly attacked by those that hide behind false names, and lie about my credentientals and work to help humanity. The difference here is that almost all my work is online and published for you to see without any charge. Please judge for yourself as to the worth of it.
One of those detractors claims that my work is even blasphemous! There is nothing in any writing I have ever done on line, in books or articles or anywhere else that teaches any concept other than that of God is Love! and that God loves and cares for all of humanity. I have deliberately reviewed every word in the book to be sure that it is acceptable to all the major religious faiths, and just to those that care for others as fundamental belief system. If that is blasphemous, then what does that person think of the love of Christ, and his teachings of love? My work is based on experience and science, not advocating any church, mosque or synagogue, but seeks to support people in what ever faith they espouse.

An A -Z Reference Book On All Aspects of Enema & Colonic Use

Dr. Knox is a more recent day writer on the subjects of enema and professional colonic irrigation therapies. I believe in good care of my body via good nutrition, excercise, living a reasonable lifestyle, plus good alternative and self care to complement todays traditional medicine. This includes good bowel care with the aid of periodic enema/colonic use. Knox joins a long list of notable medical and non-medical authors that have written about some or all of these subjects of interest to me (Such as: Robert Gray, nurtrition counselor, Dr. Bernard Jensen, Dr. Norman Walker, Sandra Duggan, R.N., and Herbert Shelton, ND who writes on the Naturapathic teachings of Doctors Jennings, Graham, Trall, and Tilden.). In addition to discussing enema/colonic therapies from A to Z, Knox covers some aspects that I have never seen discussed in any detail prior to "Love Thine Enemas And Heal Thyself." These are the emotional and pleasurable aspects that some find go along with the use of properly given enemas. He explains why some people find enemas pleasurable as a side benefit, something that sometimes confuses the person who takes enemas for general health and illness purposes, or even on a religious basis based upon the ancient Essene Gospel of Peace, Book I. I know I experienced a period of confusion. After reading his book, I realized that I was not alone in that aspect of my enema use, and realized that a properly given enema should feel good during and after. He teaches, in effect, that the pleasurable aspect experienced by some need not be disassociated with health! His book helped me not only to accept what I think is healthy for me with judicial and appropriate use for my specific body, but to accept the pleasure and healthy feelings that result. I would guess that enemas and colonics are not for everyone, with some even contraindicated, but for those like me, "Love Thine Enemas and Heal Thyself" is a treasured addition to my knowledge on the subjects, for which I thank Dr. Knox. Although the enema and colonic therapies are not as fashionable as they were fifty years ago (although appears to be on the comeback), everyone that believes in them, or interested in investigating the aspects of such use, will find the book among those to be referred to for full understanding, in addition to counsel from a trusted health care professional.

Jerry Knox hits the 'nail' on the head with this book. it is full of knowledge on all aspects of enemas and colonics. a MUST read for anyone looking to learn how to give and take real old fashioned enemas safely. it also gives insite into the psychological aspects of enemas that I've never seen in print before....
