Much more than a coloring book – an excellent 30 day guide for devotional studies with 15 Pages of Coloring Designs

As I have purchased and reviewed the Premium version of other of this publishers books, I'm certain that the paper in the spiral-bound version of the book is an improvement over what the paperback.

This is an excellent devotional guide which can be accomplished in 30 days (as the writer suggests) or at your own speed if you prefer to save out the time you spend in devotional study.

The format of the book alternates between one day of suggested tasks and prayers to the next day of coloring. That amounts to fifteen days each of both formats. Each day is prefaced with cited verse of Scripture and the task/coloring relates back to that verse.

Each day has a page of verse and then the author shares her personal thoughts and experiences which relate to the verse. Then, you either follow the tasks or color the design depending on which day it is.

I found the course of study to be of immense personal use for me. It seemed as if the entire book had been geared towards the issues I have been facing. The stories that the author tells are heartfelt and the suggested tasks are ones that, while I found a bit emotionally challenging, were ultimate rewarding for me.

The coloring was just a small part of this book and the designs are geared to and highlight the Bible verse. Each of the drawings can be accomplished in a day.

For coloring purposes, the paper in this book is white, thin, slightly rough and non-perforated. Alcohol and water-based markers bleed through. Gel pens and India ink leave shadows of color on the back of the back. Colored pencils work well (both oil and wax based) but hard lead pencils can leave dents. I use a blotter page under the page I am working on (both coloring and using a pen for writing) to keep ink and dents from marring the pages below.

Simple and Impactful

This is truly an awesome book. I really did not expect such rich content. I ordered this as a gift for my wife who enjoys her quiet time every morning. But after reading through it for myself, it made me realize how simple spending time with God can be and how much we can complicate things on our own.
I especially love the slots for prayers, this way I'll be able to look back on all the answered prayers God has granted. Really Cool and Great Gift.

For Victorian era writers only

The title should have been "A Writer's Guide to Everyday Life in Victorian England". While there is a wealth of information on Victorian era customs and daily life, there is very little on the Regency period. Even when the book makes general statements these statements are often applicable only to the Victorian era. As a Regency writer myself, I would caution other writers not to rely on this book for Regency period information.
There were great differences between the Regency and Victorian eras, obvious differences such as changes in fashion, or the rapid industrializiation, and more subtle differences such as transformations in public and private behavior.
Recommended for Victorian authors, but for Regency authors you would be better served to seek out a copy of "The Regency Companion" by Laudermilk & Hamlin.

A very uneven book

This book could be very useful, but often more as a guide to other sources, rather than as a authority in its own right. The appendices, listing numerous references sources as well as a very useful list of relevant museums should be valuable to anyone starting out to do research. Particularly relevant sources are also collected at the end each chapter.

If this is intended to be a reference source for writers, then they need detailed information laid out in an efficient format. Hughes does this sometimes, and other times seems to wander off into writing an anecdotal social history. I wonder whether it was a good idea to pack 90 years that saw enormous social changes into one book. I think that Hughes has often wasted space including extensive quotes that would have been better paraphrased and condensed, as well as including information of marginal use, such as numerous recipes and a list of the number of servants advertising for jobs in the Times on January 10, 1870.

One might also wonder why 1801-1810 is not covered, especially since there is a writer's guide covering the 18th century. The period isn't completely ignored, but it must be frustrating for anyone wanting information about the turn of the 18th-19th century. Granted, the Regency, strictly speaking, was 1811-1820, but that wasn't the start of the Victorian era either. Many people consider the Regency period to go back to 1800 or even 1780.

The chapters themselves are uneven in quality. The first section, on lighting, is precisely the sort of thing a writer would need: the different types of lighting are carefully described in detail with dates given so that the reader knows precisely what was in use when. Rather than simply saying that gaslights began to be installed in London in 1807, Hughes carefully explains that only certain small areas were lit at first. There are also very useful lists like the terminuses for the stage coaches, papers in circulation, naval insignia, prohibitions to marriage, etc.

On the other hand, Hughes tells us that flush toilets were invented by 1777 and then leaps to the 1860s to talk about Victorian bathrooms. What about the near century in between? Were people installing flush toilets, or were they simply experimental? On a number of occasions, Hughes throws in an interesting quote on some subject, such as the excerpts from The Habits of Good Society, published in 1864 without any indication of whether the information is valid for the entire era or only for the immediate period.

In the chapter on clothing, Hughes wisely tells us that she is not going to attempt to give a history of fashion in one chapter and provides an extensive bibliography. She then takes up the chapter with long quotes from various sources, but this hit or miss information isn't very helpful, and could have been summarized in a few sentences. I think that Hughes would have done better to warn the reader about tricky subjects that may not be covered in a basic history of fashion and need to be researched. Court dress, for example, was codifed, and a writer should not necessarily send a character to court in a fashionable outfit, however fine. I'm not an expert, but I believe that the rules for court dress also changed during this period: an author would need to look this up so that the outfits are appropriate to the specific time. I believe that this is also the period when the special-purpose wedding dress came into fashion. Early in the century, brides were married in their best day dress, cut according to ordinary fashion, not a special design. If she could afford a trousseau, it might be new for the wedding, but it would not be any special color. Veils and the one-use fantasy dress came later.

Hughes does give us some information relating specifically to the middle class and the poor, which is good, but she often describes customs, particularly mourning customs, which can only have applied to the wealthiest, without much indication of the shift in customs as one moves down the social scale. She does include a useful list of mourning fabrics, though oddly enough, it does not include paramatta, which is mentioned several times in the text.

I'd love to see a second, greatly revised edition. Meanwhile, I think that writers interested in the Regency Era would be better served by Malcolm Day's Voices from the World of Jane Austen, Jennifer Kloester's Georgette Heyer's Regency World, and Sharon H. Laudermilk's & Teresa Hamlin's The Regency Companion (Garland Reference Library of the Humanities, Vol. 841).

Good but mostly sporadic

It is impossible to sum up social life and culture for the 19th century, and authors simply should not try. Hughes' book is a good example. It certainly has many pieces of useful information for both writers and scholars--I never knew that the Adelphi Theater was only open from October to April, for example--and Hughes' tracing of certain topics such as indoor lighting or the railways are concise and intriguing.
Unfortunately, she doesn't explain her terms nearly enough, and the quotations from contemp- orary sources seem overused--as though all of those period recipes were simply padding out space. There's an entire paragraph devoted to the etiquette of "cutting" which is completely incomprehensible if you are not first aware of the actual meaning of social cuts. Also, Hughes does not really work within context well; she doesn't seem to understand that etiquette books were not so much used by those in the upper circles, but by those aspiring to move upwards, or that the very reason for a plethora of etiquette books implies that they are needed--in other words, people are *not* following proper etiquette in their daily lives.
The writer of Victorian-based historical novels would do well to have this book on her reference shelf, but the casual reader will do better to read Sally Mitchell's Daily Life in Victorian England. This book would have been much more useful if it had narrowed its topic and explored them in greater depth.

A great story!

It's a great story of a "normal" (define "normal") family and how it got to where they are. Loved the story and especially loved the plot, I think he hit the spot by giving all the various voices and views by the different characters. As usual, the characters are amazing, Granny Joan is the perfect ironic counterpoint to otherwise heavy situations, and yet is granting us with what I think is one of the most moving episodes in the book. I liked the various points of view, and the balance between the present and the flashbacks in the past.
It reminded me of Mike Gayle, Matt Dunn, and David Nicholls, too, whose Us, we discover in Jon Rance’s blog, was an inspiration while writing this book. Also referring to his blog, I must say he provides the perfect balance between drama and humour.
I think it’s his best so far, and I thoroughly recommend it!

I absolutely loved Sunday Dinners with the Wilde family

I absolutely loved Sunday Dinners with the Wilde family! It is a fabulous read, all the more so because there are so many situations and feelings I can relate to - not The Retreat though, definitely not The Retreat - buy the book and you will see what I mean, hilarious LOL!

Once a month Greg Wilde cooks a Sunday dinner to ensure the whole family, Lizzy, Lucy, Matt, Hollie and Nan Joan get together and it's here we discover the complexities of thecharacters, alternated in each chapter detailing the highs and lows of what's going on in their lives. Jon is an amazing author, from a middle aged menopausal woman to a young teenage girl, Jon's writing is just superb!

Sunday Dinners is full of drama, sad times, humour and very very funny 'one liners' I laughed and cried throughout.

Please go buy the book, it's a MUST read!

A good read but 50% cliché

From the very beginning the writing seemed very trite- the way the family dynamics were introduced and such. I kept reading because I thought maybe it would get better...and it did to a certain extent. There is good plot development that sometimes catches you off guard but then other times you know exactly what's coming because it's straight out of a romcom movie or something. Writing aside, it's a nice story about a family that loves each other and goes through life together and also apart. One story, different perspectives approach. It's neat to see the different family members each w their own personalities and such, yet still bonded by the familial love.

Sri Ramakrishna (A.D. 1836-1886) practised various religious austerities both within and outside Hinduism and experienced the fundamental truths which are the basis of all religions. It's a difficult read. I am in a Vedanta study circle in which we study the text as a group. Reading it as an individual would be tough going.

a rare treasure

Books like this are one in a million. This is one of humanity's great treasures. If you haven't read it yet, don't hesitate another minute. Ramakrishna enriches the life of anyone who listens to him. He represents the fulfillment of human aspiration to divinity. And besides, he's great fun! Nikhilananda's biography and translation are also excellent. Get ready to be inspired.

The words of a true Teacher

I can say without any hesitation that this book is the book closest to my heart. When asked the common question, `which is your favorite book', most people who want to give an honest answer would be mildly taken aback and also perhaps irritated as they go mentally over the books they have loved, which are all possibly `favorite books' in different ways.

But in this, I have an advantage over most people in that I can say straight out, `this (the present book) is my favorite book'.

This has always been a book that has always had a deep influence on me. I would keep the book beside me, on my bedside, and from time to time open at any page randomly and read a few passages. The simplicity of the message always got to me without fail. For a few moments at least, I would be transported from my world of hectic work and money to a world where all this did not matter, where only the love of god mattered and where to love god and be immersed in Him were not a philosophy to be discussed but something which was entirely real and a way of life.

Ramakrishna is the living proof that men even in this world, men who are not historical legends but who are almost within our reach in time, can still `touch' God, have mystical experience of oneness with God.

Ramakrishna's religion was love, love of god. It seemed almost immaterial to him which God it was. He deliberately set out to explore different religions and by turns worshipped Jesus and also in the Islamic way. He found the mystical experience through all religions and thus was able to declare them true. Moreover, he experienced oneness not just with the dualistic Gods of different religions but also the Absolute of Advaita. His words therefore spring from a deep well of wisdom, and they resonate with a clearness and lucidity which will touch the hearts of all. His simple words

M (Mahendra Gupta) was a lay devotee, that is, a householder devotee. But there is almost nothing about him in the book, it is all about the Master. It is rare for anyone to be able to efface himself so completely and bring to life the subject only. The translation is excellent, although the English translations of Bengali songs can be awkward at times, but this rather added to the enchanted nature of the book.

Going through the book for writing this review, I rediscovered once more the earthy humor, the simple examples and fables, the wisdom of each and every word of this Master. This is a book that I would recommend to everyone who is searching for a genuine word of a man of God. This is the word from such a man, not someone lost in history but someone comparatively recent. I can give my word that if you have an open heart and mind, these are words that will touch you deeply.
